Flowers of the liquorice plant

As we approach the season for catching colds and flu consider adding the herb to liquorice to your medicine chest.  Used as an ingredient in cough mixtures and throat lozenges, Glycyrrhiza glabra or liquorice has been used to treat sore throats, mouth ulcers, stomach ulcers, inflammatory stomach conditions and indigestion. It is also used to combat food poisoning in modern herbalism. Liquorice rhizomes can be chewed or made into tea, which with other anti-spasmodic herbs is often taken for menstrual cramps.

The Symphony of Sound

The sounds, words, thoughts, feelings, sensations, intentions we experience and are exposed to—affect our well-being and the wellness of those in our lives. Researchers have discovered that sounds and vibrations that fill our external environment affect our internal environment, our very cells and the more than 70% water content of our bodies. Better-Longer-Deeper

To develop lifelong satisfaction, choose your words wisely and speak them slowly.  You’ll need to generate at least five positive messages for each negative utterance you make if you want your business and your personal relationships to really flourish.  You’ll feel better, you’ll live longer, and you’ll build deeper and more trusting relationships with others—at home and at work.  (www.psychologytoday.com)

Flying High Now

Rebounding is extremely effective 'no impact' exercise - especially important for those with less mobility or undergoing rehabilitation.  People new to rebounding should start out slowly to give the body proper time to adjust. Rebounding is simple, safe and fun, it is easy to stick with, almost everyone can do it and it is found to be 68% more efficient than running on a treadmill. (www.healthmakers.co.za)

To Click or Blink, That is the Question

Eye trackers may replace the mouse on your computer.  An eye tracker is a device that uses projection patterns and optical sensors to gather data about gaze direction or eye movements with very high accuracy. Most eye trackers are based on the fundamental principle of corneal-reflection tracking; eye presence detection, position, identification, movement, patterns; eyelid closure; pupil size and pupil dilation; gaze direction and point. Step Away From The Screen

The slow technology movement seeks to alter how humans interact with technologies including mobile devices, social media, email and other relatively recent innovations that tend to be highly addictive, or at least consume a lot of time.  The movement is intended to curb some of the damaging effects of excessive technologies in human life, primarily through promoting slower or less extreme interactions with certain technologies.

Where Joy and Sorrow Meet

Art can humanize medicine.  Art in any form, being an expression of intense human emotions, has the power to heal different kinds of acute health conditions. Hospital is a place where joy and sorrow meet. Art can create all necessary conditions for healing illness. - Dr Iva Fattorini (image:streetanatomy)

Perfecting Performance

Performing artists are athletes. Like athletes, performing artists practice and/or perform most days with little off season, play through pain, "compete" in challenging environments, and risk career-threatening injury.  There are several organizations, institutions and universities who have engaged in collaborative exchange and application of wellness, training and performance research and initiatives to integrate the science of sport and the performing arts for the mutual benefit of both.  (Photo: University of Northern Iowa)
