Move It Out

Rest is vitally important to illness recovery.  Movement, depending on the level of malaise, may be beneficial as well.  Guidelines for exercising while sick are summarized for you below, only if you feel up to it.  Get well soon.
Day 1 of illness:
Only low intensity exercise with symptoms like sore throat, coughing, runny nose, congested nose.
No exercise at all when experiencing muscle/joint pain, headache, fever, malaise, diarrhea, vomiting.
Day 2 of illness:
If body temp >37.5-38 C, or increased coughing, diarrhea, vomiting, do not exercise.
If no fever or malaise and no worsening of “above the neck” symptoms: light exercise with pulse less than 120 bpm for 30-45 minutes, by yourself, indoors if winter.
Day 3 of illness:
If fever and symptoms still present: consult doctor.
If no fever/malaise, and no worsening of initial symptoms: moderate exercise with pulse less than 150 bpm for 45 - 60 min, by yourself, indoors if winter.
Day 4 of illness:
If no symptom relief, no exercise. Go to doctor.
If fever and other symptoms improved, wait 24 hours, then return to exercise.
If new symptoms appear, go to doctor.

Serving With Care and Compassion

Police officers and federal agents are our public servants paid by us and charged to protect and serve. BEFORE YOU ARE ARRESTED 1) maintain a reasonable distance; 2) write down vehicle and badge numbers; 3) ask if you are free to go; 4) if are not free to go ask why you are being detained; 5) do not consent to search. IF YOU ARE ARRESTED do not resist arrest and your rights must be read to you.  You have the right to 1) request / receive a lawyer; 2) make a local phone call, memorize a family member and / or attorney phone number; 3) remain silent.

There's A Pill For That

If you're like 1 in 3 American adults, you regularly take more than one prescription drug, according to the CDC.  Prescription drug medical reactions and errors kill almost 300 daily and up to 784,000 patients annually.  Your doctor won’t necessarily know all of the medicines you’re taking so ask them these questions when they give you a prescription.

1.     What is this prescription for?
2.     How will this medicine help me?
3.     What are the side effects?
4.     How do I take this medicine?
5.     Do you know how expensive this is, or if my insurance plan will cover it?
6.     Are there non-drug options I can try?
7.     Why is this new drug better for me than what I was taking?

Perception of Protection

With the recent turn of events occurring in places of work, worship and play, here is some information on how to spot someone carrying a concealed weapon. Innocuous details that could be telltale signs of a gun include: Is the man's sweater color-coordinated with the rest of his outfit? When he walks, does the front edge of his jacket cling to one thigh more than the other? As he steps off the curb, does his hand brush his hip? (Robert T. Gallagher, former NYPD officer)

Self-Service Safety

Pumping our own gas and checking ourselves out at the grocery store exposes us to all types of bacteria.  Touch a germ-infected surface, rub your nose or mouth, and the next thing you know, microbes are setting up shop in your body.  Viruses and bacteria live in public areas such as gas stations, shopping malls, grocery stores, restaurants. They can live up to two hours on elevator buttons, shopping carts, escalator handrails, or doorknobs, waiting for their next victim.  Cover the gas pump with a paper towel from the windshield cleaning station next time you fill your car tank.

It's Gettin' Hot in Here - So Take Off...

I know you know the rest of the words to that song. :-) On a serious note, the summer temperatures are reaching record highs.  I call this desert weather. I lived in the southwest desert one summer and the heat is serious. You can become dehydrated in a matter of minutes.
So this is what my sister and the CDC taught me about surviving desert weather.
Can you spell H-Y-D-R-A-T-E.  Consider the following:
1. carry a bottle of water with you at all times. drink a lot of water - 8 cups are the usual, double that in the desert weather-also add a little sea salt himalayan pink and lemon to restore electrolytes; 2. wear sunglasses to keep your eyes from drying out; 3. carry an umbrella to provide shade; 4. run errands early morning and late afternoon when its cooler

This Land Is Your Land

We are so excited about our latest project.  We are building a farm. Land ownership is a vital asset to all communities. We hope this will spark discussion as a solution for the riots that are sprouting in this country.

I will post informal vlogs and interesting facts about the project as we move forward on this journey. We met with one of our collaborators from Tennessee State University.  Listen as he shares a little about his background.

The 1999 Agricultural Economics and Land Ownership Survey (AELOS), which assessed private rural landownership use  (i.e. farming, forestry, etc.), found that there are currently 68,000 African-American rural landowners and they own a total of approximately 7.7 million acres of land, less than 1% of all privately owned rural land in the United States.  (AELOS, 1999).  Sixty percent (60%) of which is owned by non-farmers.  (AELOS, 1999).  However, this acreage is valued at $14 billion.  (AELOS, 1999).

Catch Your Breath

Consider replacing chemical based cleaners and detergents with natural cleaning products to improve the air quality in your work and home environment.  This also helps clear breathing issues such as asthma and allergies. Alternatives include white vinegar, baking soda, borax and lemons. Source: Chemical Injury Network

Find Your Edge

Studies suggest that engaging in an activity that pushes us to the edge of our limits releases chemicals in our body that activate the relaxation response in our body (i.e., a natural high maybe?).  The chart below identifies our limits.  How far will you go to find your edge? Preserving Your Positive Attitude

A positive attitude is a key component to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  Studies suggest that we are the only species with the ability to change the quality of our health through our thoughts.  One recommendation for you to consider is practicing sound therapy through tools such as voice and instrument.  Soothing sound distracts the mind to break the cycle of stress.   Source:  Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, Cornell Weil Medical College.
